Core values from the caves.
Museums and monuments
are meant to remind us of the struggles and successes of our predecessors, in
the hopes that we might achieve more than them. Biak-na-bato national park is
no different from a museum. Whilst we were there we crawled through the same
caves where the Katipuneros operated in during the Philippine revolution, and
we were given insight by our tour guides about the conditions endured and the
sacrifices made by the revolutionaries. Truly, the caves served as a reminder
for me and my classmates to strive for more, and to strengthen our passion for
excellence. Because if the Katipuneros fought and endured against
insurmountable odds, I do not see why I should have to give any less what they
did.
Another core value of
Don Bosco I had found relevant and apparent to the Lakbay-Aral trip was St.
John Bosco's core value of having solidarity with nature. Before the trip, I
was not comfortable with the thought of wading through freshwater, and having
to crawl through mud, but afterwards I came to realize that these caves were an
important part of our nation's history and identity. It would not hurt to care
for the environment so the next generation may also enjoy exploring and
breathing in the fresh air we still enjoy today.
I will always remember
this outbound amongst my favorite memories of my Bosconian life, because I had
learned so much about the importance of the two mentioned core values to the growth
and development of not only our country, but of the whole world.
